Becoming a Young Trustee

Are you ready for a challenging and important role? Being a Trustee is not easy, but it comes with great rewards.

Get On Board is here to help. We recognise that becoming a Trustee, especially without significant work and life experience, requires training and upskilling. With the Get On Board programme’s support, you’ll be able to grow in confidence and knowledge, allowing you to contribute to all matters of YMCA governance – from safeguarding to long-term financial plans.

To be be considered for a YMCA Young Trustee you must meet the following criteria:

  • Age 18 – 26
  • Practicing Christian – we will ask for references from your Church leader
  • Motivated to make positive change in your community
  • Committed to meeting with a Trustee Mentor on a regular basis
  • Willing to attend accredited training sessions as and when required – online, in person and overnight

What is it like to be a Young Trustee?

What Young Trustees can expect from Get On Board

  • A warm welcome and induction from your YMCA
  • A bespoke training package over a period of 6 months
  • Opportunity for regular attendance at Board meetings as a co-opted Trustee
  • Access to an online learning portal and evidence of your learning through a set of micro-credentials
  • Regular support and 1:1s from an experienced Trustee Mentor from your YMCA
  • Regular networks with other young people engaged in the Get On Board programme
  • Full Board membership at your YMCA upon completion of the programme
  • Accommodation, travel, expenses, and food costs for the residential elements of the programme

What Get On Board expects from Young Trustees

  • A positive attitude and willingness to learn and ask questions
  • Attendance at all aspects of the training programme – both online, in person and a three day residential trip
  • Attendance at Board meetings as agreed with your YMCA whilst a co-opted member
  • Regular engagement with peer networks and mentoring with your Trustee mentor
  • Commitment to becoming a full Board member upon successful completion of the course

The Selection Process is as follows

  1. Complete the form below
  2. We will follow up your church reference and create a shortlist of applicants
  3. If shortlisted, we will invite you to have a chat with a Trustee and the CEO
  4. If you are successful, you will need to be available for the following dates, so please put them in your calendar
