Trust with Accountability

Trust with Accountability

This week’s devotion comes from Steve Bavington (CEO), as he explores what our YMCA value of TRUST means to him.

Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but whoever takes crooked paths will be found out.
Proverbs 10:9

It often feels to me that trust is in short supply. We question who to trust and which voices to believe. Yet trust is one of the essential building blocks of healthy relationships and communities. When trust breaks down, everyday interactions become guarded. Suspicion and cynicism creep in, and connection begins to suffer.

For me, trust is strongest when it walks hand in hand with accountability. Openness and honesty are what allow trust to grow and deepen. When people are clear, transparent and willing to be accountable for their actions, trust becomes something others can rest in. It creates space for vulnerability, learning and growth. So yes, we trust – and we also choose to be open and accountable so that trust is reinforced, not assumed.

I see this value lived out clearly in our central support teams at YMCA BCG — HR, Finance and Facilities. These teams carry significant responsibility for our people, resources and buildings. They work within clear legal and professional frameworks, but they also show care, clarity and integrity in how they listen, communicate and act. Their openness helps build confidence across the organisation, and their commitment reflects our shared values.

My faith shapes how I understand trust as well. I believe God places trust in me, while also inviting honesty and openness in return. Being willing to listen, reflect and accept correction helps me grow into someone who is more trustworthy. As I trust God, I try to live in a way that others can trust too.

Point to ponder: What is one small step you could take to build trust — through openness, consistency or honesty — in your work or relationships this week?
