Residents Rise to the Challenge in the Peak District

Residents Rise to the Challenge in the Peak District

A group of 14 YMCA residents recently stepped out of their comfort zones and into the great outdoors during a memorable two-night residential at the Peak Centre in Edale.

Accompanied by Gary, Megan and Haris from YMCA’s Housing team, the trip offered a packed schedule of activities designed to challenge, inspire and bring people together. From archery and ping pong to relaxed evenings around the campfire, residents had the chance to try new experiences while building confidence and strengthening relationships.

A key highlight of the trip was a challenging five-mile hike up Mam Tor. For many residents, this was their first experience of a walk of this scale, making it both physically demanding and incredibly rewarding. Despite initial apprehension, participants showed determination and resilience, supporting one another to reach the summit and take in the stunning views across the Peak District.

The group were joined by our friends at Midlands Creative, who captured everything on film! The video below features residents Alex and Ryan, who both shared reflections on their experience. They spoke openly about feeling nervous before the trip but were pleased they took part, describing the sense of achievement after completing the hike and the friendships they formed along the way. Both highlighted how the experience helped them step outside their usual routines and connect with others within YMCA.

Trips like these offer significant benefits for young people, particularly those who may not often access outdoor opportunities. Being in nature can boost mental wellbeing, reduce stress and improve mood, while physical challenges help build resilience, self-belief and a sense of accomplishment. Just as importantly, shared experiences like this encourage social connection, teamwork and trust.

Overall, the residential was a fantastic success, leaving residents with lasting memories, new friendships and a renewed sense of confidence. Huge thanks to the team at the Peak Centre for welcoming us and ensuring our residents had a great time; and to Matt & Jake for capturing everyone’s reactions.

We would love more opportunities to take our residents on this kind of trip, if you or your company would be interested in sponsoring such a trip, please contact us on fundraising@ymcabc.org.uk to find out how.
