SHINING A LIGHT

SHINING A LIGHT

This week’s devotional comes from Sally Cowan, CO (Places) as she shares her thoughts about what our value of INSPIRE means to her.

“Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” — Matthew 5:16

Inspiring others means more than just giving advice or cheering someone on. It’s about living in a way that motivates people, uplifts them, and reminds them of hope. Positivity is contagious — a kind word, a smile, or even the way I handle challenges can encourage someone to keep going. I want my actions to reflect encouragement, not judgement, so that others feel supported and valued. That’s why I enter a room loudly with a cheery hello, a big smile and hopefully an uplifting attitude.

I see this every day at YMCA. Take, for example, the young people in our supported housing. When a Housing Support Officer celebrates even small achievements — like attending an interview, learning a new skill, or just getting through a tough day — it inspires them to believe in themselves. Staff and volunteers often model resilience, patience, and care. That encouragement can spark confidence in a young person who might have felt hopeless, showing them that they are capable and valued. Small acts, like listening attentively or offering reassurance, can create a ripple effect of positivity.

Jesus lived a life of encouragement and hope. He lifted up the downtrodden, offered words of comfort to those who were lost, and inspired others to follow Him not through force but through love. When I rely on Him, I remember that my purpose is not just to succeed personally, but to lift others as I walk alongside them. Jesus reminds me that even small gestures, done with love, can shine brightly in someone’s life.

Point to ponder:

Today, think about one way you can inspire someone — a word, an action, or simply being present. It doesn’t have to be grand. Even a small spark of encouragement can help someone believe in themselves and keep moving forward. Ask yourself: How can I shine my light today for someone else? And remember, in doing so, you reflect the love and hope of Jesus to the world around you.
