YMCA Black Country Group attended the Black Country Chamber Expo, which proved to be an invaluable opportunity to connect with local businesses, gain a deeper understanding of their ESG priorities and share how they can support young people across YMCA’s services. Many of the conversations centred on creating meaningful, skills-based opportunities, including work placements, employability workshops and corporate volunteer days. It was particularly encouraging to see businesses keen to move beyond traditional activities such as litter picks and wall painting, and instead explore initiatives that create deeper, longer-lasting impact.
The timing of the event was especially positive, with Sleep Easy promotion in full swing. This provided an immediate and tangible way for companies to get involved, resulting in two people signing up on the spot. The enthusiasm shown for supporting young people experiencing homelessness reinforced how strongly YMCA’s mission resonates within the local business community.

Grace Maddocks, Head of Communications at YMCA Black Country Group, reflected on the longstanding and valued partnership with the Black Country Chamber of Commerce. “In 2024, YMCA Black Country Group was proud to be selected as the Chamber’s Charity of the Year, strengthening relationships with members who championed and donated to the charity’s work while participating in fundraising events. The Chamber’s CEO, Sarah, joined the team for the Three Peaks Challenge, helping to raise around £8,000 to support youth work delivery. The Chamber’s commitment to “Black Country pride” is evident in its engagement with members.”
Known for its historic role in the Industrial Revolution, the region continues to lead in business, with many companies eager to align with local charities that make a direct and positive difference to the communities where their staff and customers live.
Looking ahead, there is real optimism about building on the connections made at the Expo, nurturing both new and existing partnerships to unlock further opportunities for volunteering, fundraising and collaborative impact across the Black Country.
