Shania’s Story

Shania’s Story

When Shania was 17, life at home in Nottingham became unbearable. She was living with her dad, but a relative staying with them started making unwanted advances. Already struggling with anxiety, Shania felt unsafe and overwhelmed. She made the brave decision to leave and moved in with her uncle in Birmingham. Her uncle was supportive, and they had a great relationship, but his home was overcrowded so it wasn’t a long-term solution. Shania applied for help through her local council and was placed in temporary accommodation. Unfortunately, the place wasn’t suitable, and her anxiety worsened.

Things began to change when she opened up to a college tutor, who referred her to YMCA West Bromwich. In November 2024, Shania moved into YMCA West Bromwich Housing and started working with the team there. They tailored their support to her needs, helping her settle in and continue her studies at Sandwell College.

Over the months, Shania’s confidence grew. She became more assertive, kept her space spotless, and stuck to her support plan. With support from YMCA, she chose to reconnect with her dad and kept close ties with her uncle and siblings. Though she’s still cautious around new people and very aware of her safety, she’s built a small, trusted circle of support.

With encouragement from her key worker, Shania applied to university and was thrilled to be accepted at Leicester University. She started her first term in September 2025. Moving again was nerve-wracking, it was her third move in three years, but she was excited for the fresh start.

To help her settle into student life, Shania applied to the Moving Forward Fund, which is designed to support YMCA residents who are ready to leave and move-on into their next step in life. Thanks to the fund, Shania received a home starter pack with all the essentials including bedding, cookware, a microwave, and more, so she could move into halls with confidence.

Now, Shania is thriving. She’s more self-assured, knows how to advocate for herself, and is aware of the opportunities available to her. Her journey hasn’t been easy, but she’s shown incredible resilience and determination. We’re proud to have been part of her story.
